Hearts of Ta’leef

KEVIN’S STORY

When did you first come to Ta’leef?

Kevin: It was I don’t know six or seven months ago. Prayer circle.

What is your fondest memory at Ta’leef?

Kevin: Definitely the first Mawlid I came to; the drums just reminded of the Go-Go’s I used to go to in DC which were not halal but I love my culture; to be connected to that within a halal way was just a transcendent experience. I cried a lot.

Why do you come to Ta’leef?

Well I started because my brother and sister both took the shahada at the retreat. And I felt like I owed it to Ta’leef to support and now I feel like Ta’leef supports me, helps my week, helps me stay on my knee. I’m certainly very grateful that I have it; made a lot of difficult times I’ve gone through a lot easier. And you know in particular, it’s just hard for people who aren’t converts to imagine like how great it is I was Muslim for a long time kind of on my own and sort of antitheist family and world and to have both of my siblings convert was really an extraordinary blessing that words could never capture and I don’t think that would’ve happened if it weren’t for Ta’leef.
